Adding wood ash to compost piles - Yes or No?

Asked October 13, 2015, 8:47 AM EDT

Is there a "bottom line" regarding use of wood ash in compost piles? Some sources say "yes", while others say "no". I'd like to get HGIC advice on this question. Thanks for any guidance you can give, and many thanks for your expertise.

You can use it. Here is an extension pub regarding wood ash which refers to compost: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/wood-ash-can-be-useful-yard-if-used-caution

Wood ash is alkaline, so should not be overused. Go lightly. Sprinkling a layer over a fresh layer of compost works well. Of course, never use the ash from pressure-treated wood.
