What kind of plant is this?

Asked October 12, 2015, 1:54 PM EDT

We moved in to our house in the spring. The former owners did some renovative pruning on this plant. It was so ugly in the spring I thought I'd remove it. Once the purple leaves started growing I thought I'd leave it and see where it went. It's beautiful but we'll need pruning to help it develop its new shape. I need to know what kind of plant it is so I can learn more about it. Any help is appreciated!

Hi there,

This looks like it is a Cotinus (common name: Smokebush). These shrubs are amenable to all kinds of sculpting, depending on your garden conditions. Please view this great article from the Sonoma County (California) Master Gardeners about several options for pruning your Cotinus.
