Large potted mums

Asked October 11, 2015, 7:52 PM EDT

Can I keep my potted mums inside in their pots during the winter. Do I cut them back and continue to water them or should I let them dry out and go dormant?

Yes, you can winter over mums in their pots. Cut them back to about 1" above the soil line and put them in a cool dark space (32 to 50 degrees). Water 2-3 times a month (soil should feel just slightly moist). Stick your finger down in the pot, if it feels dry 1 to 2 inches down it is time to water lightly again. Put them out in the spring past last frost, fertilize and water and they should return.
