English Walnut Cultivars

Asked October 11, 2015, 5:04 PM EDT

Are there English Walnut Cultivars that could be profitably produced in the Northern Willamette Valley? If there are, which cultivar? What are the negative aspects of producing this cultivar in the Northern Willamette Valley?

Yes there are. In fact the Willamette Valley once had a significant walnut industry. Contributing to its near demise and substantial shrinkage was the Columbus Day Storm of Oct 12 1962 (http://photos.salemhistory.net/cdm/ref/collection/max/id/876), which uprooted trees around the Valley. Untimely freezes and pest pressure are other reasons why California ultimately became the dominant player for walnut production.
