What kind of tree is this?

It has gray bark and resembles elephant skin. It's quite smooth and matured in southeast Michigan.

It is an American beech tree, Fagus grandifolia. It is a native tree across the forests of Michigan and is noted for its smooth grey bark. It is commonly found growing in a forest with Sugar maples.
