Bark dust choices for landscaping

What are the advantages/disadvantages of fir bark dust vs. hemlock bark dust? Hemlock is more expensive, but is it worth paying more?

Hemlock is highly acidic so should be used around plants that can tolerate higher acidity in the soil. Hemlock may have a color enhancer added - you can tell if when you pick it up it stains your fingers. Hemlock may have less slivers. I prefer composted bark dust as mulch since it provides nutrients to the plants quickly and any pests that may have resided in the bark have likely been killed by the composting process. Attached is an article that gives more details on the types and advantages of the different types of bark dust.
