English Walnut Trees
I have 2 English Walnut trees for the last 3 years a lot of the nuts are not falling free of the hull...the hulls are black and the nut is still inside...the nuts used to fall free of the hull with no mess with picking them up in the fall...what it causing this?
The splitting of the hull on walnuts is dependent upon the tree receiving adequate rain during the development of the nut. During late summer and so far this fall we have had very little rain. It is likely that the hulls are not splitting as they normally due because of this lack of water. The website below may provide you with some ideas for next year as well as what you may do to harvest this year's crop.
