The splitting of the hull on walnuts is dependent upon the tree receiving adequate rain during the development of the nut. During late summer and so far this fall we have had very little rain. It is likely that the hulls are not splitting as they normally due because of this lack of water. The website below may provide you with some ideas for next year as well as what you may do to harvest this year's crop.
