Topsoil and lead

Asked September 23, 2015, 9:12 AM EDT

I'm planning a vegetable garden and had my yard soil tested. It has high levels of lead. If I choose to bring in topsoil from a landscaper, is there any guarantee that what they bring to my garden doesn't have lead in it?

Please read through this page from our website about lead in garden soil:

For your vegetable beds, we'd recommend a mixture (70/30 ratio) of top soil to an organic amendment like compost, leaf mold (Leaf Gro is a product made in Maryland, not sure if you have it in N. Jersey), aged manure, etc.
There are no government regulations on topsoil here in Maryland. You should check if there are any in your area. You could also talk to your supplier and see if they test their soils. At the very least, you could check it yourself.
