Black moths in September

Asked September 22, 2015, 5:42 PM EDT

I have seen a large number of black moths in my yard for the past 2 weeks, and have never seen them before. Anything to be concerned about?

Hennepin County Minnesota moths

They may be a green clover moth (Hypena scabra). This species has been abundant in Minnesota recently, including the Twin Cities area.

University of Minnesota Entomologist Jeff Hahn recently discussed this insect in the following bulletin.
