backyard mosquito spraying

Asked September 21, 2015, 8:26 PM EDT

With the recent cool down, the mosquito and gnat population in my backyard has exploded. I'm thinking about hiring a company to spray my yard; however, I live on a small tidal creek and I'm sensitive to impacts to the waterway, other insects in my yard, and my kids. Is there a resource showing pros/cons of the different types of sprays?

If larval harborages are not eliminated and/or controlled, adult mosquitoes will still be a problem. Spraying for the adults will only give temporary relief because the life cycle has not been broken (larvae eliminated). The pesticides used as adulticides are general, broad-spectrum insecticides so they will have an impact on any insects that come into contact with the pesticide.

Hope this helps.
