Thank you for your message with attached image. The insect in the photo is called a crane fly. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/183

Crane flies develop as larvae in mud or wet soil where they feed on decaying organic matter. The adults cannot bite and are harmless.

There are crane flies in the eastern USA that damage lawns, but that species is not present in Iowa.
