broken apple tree

a bear got into my garden and broke the center of the apple tree. only lateral branches left. some branches that were torn i feel need something to protect the tear as i can not make a clean cut. what should i use. wax?? not sure if the lateral branches can be trained into an upright enough position to hold much fruit or if i should just replace the tree
