New sod

Asked September 10, 2015, 3:07 PM EDT

I recently purchased some St. Augustine sod for a very shady area in the front yard. Can you please tell me how often and when to begin to fertilize it? It looks great a month out. It is growing (we have not mowed it) and we water about every 2-3 days. Any help on the initial maintenance of it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

It is a little late to be putting down sod; however, if it is growing and is putting down new roots before our first freeze it will help it survive. All grasses need a good root system before going into winter. I wouldn't do much mowing and encourage growth as much as possible. If you do mow be sure to put your mower on the absolute highest setting.
