striped bug in house

Asked September 10, 2015, 9:00 AM EDT

We had lots of bugs in house with 2 horizontal orange stripes. Do they sting? What are they and how can we get rid of them? Thanks,

This looks like a type of carrion or burying beetle (scientific name Nicrophorus defodiens Mannerhelm). They live on dead insects The adults bury the bodies of small animals, forming the corpse into a "ball" which they feed to their larvae.

This suggests that you have some dead small animals, such as mice, that have died in the house somewhere which you'll want to locate. If you can't, they will eventually disappear.

Thanks. That makes sense because some critter just died in our chimney over the weekend and we are waiting for a chimney cleaner to get it out. Do these beetles spread disease?

Thanks for letting me know.
