Harvesting Seed from Sweet Peas

Asked September 7, 2015, 5:46 PM EDT

What germination rate should I expect from home-harvested sweet peas? Which of the seeds, color, and size should I select to get the best results?

It depends on when and how you harvest the sweet peas and how they are stored. You would be choosing the largest of the peas. But if these are hybrids, you cannot save seeds from them.

It is difficult to say what the germination rate is because there are too many variables:

  • When and where you plant them and care for them
  • If you have birds or critters that dig them up and eat them
But why do you need to know this? A great deal here depends on your experience as a gardener and if it has been successful.
