honey dew melons

Asked September 4, 2015, 8:41 AM EDT

my mature melons have developed spots on the rind. They seem to get progressively worse from one melon to the other as the melon seems to mature. I've never run into this situation in past years.

There are a number of diseases and disorders which will cause spots on the melon rind. Examples are bacterial spot and belly rot. I cannot diagnose your particular problem just from a description. I suggest you submit a sample to the Disease and Insect Clinic in your state for a positive diagnosis. I don't know that you can save this year's crop, but you can learn what to do to avoid the problem in future years. Here is the link: http://www.ent.iastate.edu/pidc/
