Pear identification

Asked September 1, 2015, 7:00 PM EDT

Can you please identify the two photos below? Should they be picked now to ripen off of the tree? Thank you for your help.

The best way to know if and when your pears are ready to harvest is test a sample at the Benton County Extension Office (4077 SW Research Way, Corvallis, OR). Take 3 pears of each type for testing. The test is free. Someone at the Extension Office will perform a Brix Test on your pears. Here is a link to a paper on testing pears http://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/node/413. Identifying the type of pear is much like doing the same for apples, very difficult even when you have the fruit in your hand. Having only a photograph makes the identification even harder and the misidentification easier. I suggest that you leave the sample you take into the extension office for possible identification.
