Asked August 29, 2015, 12:05 PM EDT

Are there ant herbicides (?) that one can spray on raspberry plant to kill weeds, etc. that will of course not harm the raspberry plants? If so, when whould be the best time to apply it. Ken

Controlling disease and pests in Raspberry crops can be a long discussion!
Ants normally do not bother raspberries, but they can be a sign of aphids. The ants "tend" the aphids in order to eat the honeydew that they produce. While the aphids do little damage to the raspberry plants they are important vectors of viral diseases and they should be controlled:

Controlling weeds around raspberry plants is tricky because there is no herbicide that you can spray on weeds to kill them that will not also harm or kill the raspberries. Commercial growers use pre-emergent herbicides that prevent annual weeds from emerging. Otherwise hand pulling is the best bet.

Here is a very extensive University Extension publication about growing raspberries:

I hope this is helpful. Please contact AaE again if you have further questions.
