Kiwi plants losing bark

Asked August 26, 2015, 7:19 PM EDT

Plants were started from cutting about 5 years ago. Last year produced about 12 fruit, this year has a massive crop, but I'm concerned about the bark on the largest plant. One picture of my grove, one of the problem and on of another non- effected plant

It appears that your Kiwi plants may have experienced some mechanical damage, perhaps by a weed trimmer, or hoe. Another possibility is a small animal or rodent. If damage by animals is unlikely, over exposure to heat and sun can cause such damage. Try shading the damaged stem with a shade block. I have attached a publication that may help you regarding the cultural needs of Kiwis.

I hope this helps.
