caterpillers on kale?

Asked August 23, 2015, 1:10 PM EDT

Just wondering if these are friendly or unfriendly bugs that have feasted on and made Swiss cheese of my kale? And what is the best "organic" way to remove them?

This is the cross-striped cabbageworm one of several caterpillars that feed on kale.Control is similar to other caterpillars. Here is one on our website: http://extension.umd.edu/growit/insects/cabbage-looper

Here is the Imported cabbagworm info from our Grow It Eat It section: http://extension.umd.edu/growit/insects/imported-cabbageworm

Here is some specific info on the cross-striped cabbagworm life cycle, but because it is from SC, the chemical recommendations should not be applied to home gardens. Use our recommendations from the webpages above. http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/pests/plant_pests/veg_fruit/hgic2203.html
