Hoping to find out what this plant/flower is

Asked August 20, 2015, 10:31 AM EDT

I have admired this plant at our local hardware store but no one seems to know what it is. Looks like it might be related to the salvia family but I'd love to get some for my own garden - assuming it is not an invasive species. It has a pink flower spike and is about knee height with leafy green base - photos enclosed. Butterfly magnet. Would also love to confirm that this is a perennial and learn if it is native plant - something we are trying hard to stick to in our home gardens. Thanks for your time.

We can't see the leaves well and are not sure. Could be a salvia verticillata. See: http://www.cnbhomes.com/salvia-purple-rain/luxurious-salvia-verticillata-purple/ Look closely at the leaves.

Or, could be purple horsemint, which is monarda citriodora. See: http://www.thehibbitts.net/terry/Plants/Lamiaceae.html

Look closely at blossom shape and leaf shape.
