Michigan Snow Apple

Back in the 1950s we'd drive from Illinois to Michigan just to buy those snow apples. Now they are no longer available. What happened?

Snow apple is an old variety that died out because of lack of sales. Growers remove and replant apple trees every 20 to 30 years and always try to plant varieties that will make money. Currently the hot varieties are Honeycrisp, Gala and Fuji. The snow apple is also know as Fameuse. apparently it was very susceptible to apple scab one of the major apple diseases which requires frequent sprays early in the season and this may have been another reason why it is not common today.
It is still available from some commercial Nurseries. Here is a description page from Stark Bros and I am sure there are other sources as well
