Utah giant cherry tree problem

Asked August 11, 2015, 5:01 PM EDT

I have a 15-foot, five-year-old Utah Giant cherry tree. Within the last week I have noticed sap oozing out of two sides right at the soil level. I scraped the sap chunks off and spayed peritherine (don't know how to spell that) now four days later it looks the same as before I sprayed. What should I do?

You did not mention any holes so rather than a borer, the tree probably has cytosphora canker. There is no cure for the canker, however removing any dead branches, proper watering etc to keep the tree healthy can help maintain the tree. Here is a handout on cytosphora in fruit trees. http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/crops/02953.html
I am also attaching some stone fruit information to properly care for the tree.
