Strange growth in my garden

Asked August 11, 2015, 1:23 PM EDT

I have never seen these before. This is the first year that these popped up in only one area of my yard. They look like some kind of mushroom maybe? The tips have some sort of sticky substance which attracts flies. There are always a bunch of regular house flies around them. Please help!

This is an interesting organism called a stinkhorn fungus.
Like mushrooms, they pop up when conditions are just right, with high moisture and humidity. They do smell and attract flies, but are harmless. If you find them objectionable, you can just knock it down. They grow from an egg-like structure underground.
