Lightning strike

Asked August 11, 2015, 9:35 AM EDT

An old maple tree has endured a lightning strike. Bark has been blown off the large trunk, and a large bare spot on the trunk is exposed. I cannot tell the status of the large branches on the tree. What is the outlook for the life of this tree? Are there interventions to take? Is it a foregone conclusion that this tree will die? Needless to say, the tree is a beautiful presence to us and we want to take the best course for preservation and health of the tree.

Thank you for your question. We will need pictures of the damage, the entire tree, and of the trunk where it meets the ground.
