killing and removal of a 'tree of paradise'

Asked August 7, 2015, 3:50 PM EDT

I have a tree of paradise that is taking over my back yard. It can send up runners and new growth faster than I can kill them.

I want to remove this tree and assure that all the new growth dies as well.

Thank you for any help you can give

It also is called tree-of-heaven or ailanthus. Cut it down and treat the stump immediately with triclopyr herbicide (e.g. Ortho Poison-ivy Killer) or Roundup. Coat the stu with it. Then cut down every runner or sprout and paint some of the herbicide on the cut surface of the sprout. Now sprouts will develop, but never let one get more than a few weeks old. You also need to remove and treat sprouts in your neighbor's yards or you won't be able to get rid of it. Good luck. Mike Kuhns
