What are the acceptable vegetables for picking and consumption that can be planted now?

Caution on planting lettuce from seed; it will not germinate when soil temperatures are above 70 degrees. Start them in a cool basement. Many of the better garden centers will have fall vegetables available soon if you prefer to purchase plants.
