Is it safe to feed Sugar Water to Honey Bees?

Asked July 29, 2015, 10:32 AM EDT

Is it harmful to feed honey bees sugar water? They have been drinking the sugar water that we put out for our humming birds. They have been drinking a lot this this past week since the weather has gotten hotter.

It is not harmful to feed honey bees sugar water. In fact, beekeepers often feed sugar water to honey bees in the winter if they are running low on honey. Honey bees prefer nectar over sugar water, as nectar has a higher sugar content. Honey bees will, however, take sugar water from hummingbird feeders if there aren't a lot of plant blooming or if they need additional water to cool their hives.
