Worming Chickens?

Asked July 25, 2015, 11:45 PM EDT

I have a small flock of chickens. They are now about 3 years old. They are part time free rangers, and seem healthy. Do I need to worm chickens? I have read differing opinions online. We are located east of Lebanon if that makes any difference :-) Thank you.

The short answer is "no". If you are having a problem and parasites are identified as the cause they deworming in conjunction with changes to sanitation would be appropriate. Internal parasitism can be diagnosed by examination of feces by the diagnostic lab or a necropsy on dead birds. The only approved broad spectrum product is hygromix and it must be fed continuously. I cannot recommend this unless there is a confirmed diagnosis of intestinal species likely to be controlled by this product.
