can a mojave rattler survive in N.W. Illinois

Asked July 23, 2015, 1:38 PM EDT

a motor home from N.W. Illinois spent winter at edge of desert, Arizona. Back in Ill., parked inside a building owner later found a snake skin on floor, pretty positive identified that of a mojave rattler that may have "caught a ride" to Ill. If so, can that snake survive in Illinois?

Thank you for your question to eXtension.

I don't know a lot about snakes in general, and practically nothing about desert snakes. However, based on this article (http://online.sfsu.edu/bholzman/courses/Fall00Projects/rsnake.htm ), I don't expect the snake to live a long time in Illinois before the winter kills it off...unless it is extremely lucky with where it finds to stay.

I recommend, just for your peace of mind, that you hire a licensed wildlife trapper and see if he can catch and identify any snakes on your property. Good luck!
