Silver Mound Artimesia

Asked July 18, 2015, 1:07 PM EDT

What is the best way to divide Silver Mound Artemesia. I have several plants and after the first year they are doing their usual thing...spreading in the middle. Would it be best to dig the whole plant out or leave in ground and how best to divide. HELP!! Thank you...

There are several species and varieties of artemesia. It is common for clumps to open up in the center by midsummer. Depending upon the type that you have, pruning is recommended. Shear back by 1/3 to 1/2 in the summer usually returns them to good form. Silver mound habit is best maintained if flowering is prevented entirely. Several types are really not that hardy here and planting in a protected site may help. Plants can also rot in high humidity. Division of this woody subshrub is difficult. If you decide to divide, do it in the spring.
