Mature beeches are typically pruned in the dormant season if they need pruning. Young trees are often pruned two or three times a year to promote branching and growth. In the Northern Hemisphere July is a good time to tip (cut off the tip of the branch often about a quarter of the new growth's length) the branches and promote branching and growth. If growth is vigorous you can tip again in the fall. Normally this is only done the first few years and if you desire a dense bushy form.
