Hummingbirds being chased by wasps

Asked July 9, 2015, 6:56 PM EDT

For several years we've had a hummingbird feeder on the front porch. This year, the yellowjackets and wasps chase away the hummingbirds. We are afraid to use wasp killer spray in case it would hurt the birds. Do you have any ideas? We use sugar and water in the feeder.

Wasps have been chasing hummingbirds at feeders as long as there have been feeders. They will continue to do so. Do not use wasp killers. We know of no way of stopping it. Make sure your feeder is not leaking. There are feeders available that supposedly have bee guards, but we do not know if they are effective. You could try the wildlife hotline to see if they have any suggestions. 1 877 463-6497. vw
