How much of an environmental impact do bagged leaves in landfills cause? What...
I do apologize for the delay in responding to your question. I just received it this afternoon. The answer I could find concerning the environmental impact of bagged leaves in landfills was from a Michigan State University publication by G. T. Lyman
that states: " . . . . prior to 1994, it (yard waste) accounted for approximately 20 to 25 percent of Michigan’s throwaway trash. " Here is the link to the entire article that provides options to the landfill. Mulching leaves and grass provide value to your yard and garden and save wastes from the landfills.

Another resource you may find helpful is from MSU in their Smart Gardening series concerning mulching leaves:
I recommend a review of all of their Smart Gardening tip sheets.
