Why is my red bleeding heart coming up white this year?

Asked July 8, 2015, 12:29 PM EDT

I have a bleeding heart that started out red, but this year it came up white. Also, I have a pink flowering spirea and it, too, bloomed white this year. Why might this be happening?

Many people ask the same question about various plants because they are certain flower color change has occurred. However, experts seem to agree this does not happen. Even so, flower color and our perception of it can be complicated.

Bleeding hearts (Dicentra spectabilis) self seed and flowers of the resulting plants are white or red so it's possible a volunteer overgrew and replaced the original.
