germination and emergence problem with biochar

Asked July 6, 2015, 1:59 PM EDT

Hello, I planted potato with plantain peel biochar amendment. The control that has no biochar germinated between the 13th to 15th day of planting, while the biochar amended pots are yet to germinate even after the 23rd day of planting. I read from your blog that you have worked with biochar and potato. did you experience late germination problem?

Not all biochars are created equal. The plantain peel biochar could vary significantly based on the pyrolysis conditions. Amending it to a potting mix may or may not improve the physical properties of the potting mix. The pH and EC of your biochar may also be an factor. I haven't encounter any late germination problem with the biochar I've been using.

Thank you very much for your response. I will get more information from you if need be.
