What is causing my spruce trees to lose their needles?

Asked July 5, 2015, 1:26 PM EDT

We have two spruce trees that were absolutely beautiful until this summer. They have lost large, complete areas of needles. Upon close observation I see that the needles appear to start randomly dying (brown, almost purple) followed by the death of the rest of the needles. Some of the new growth is also dying. Help! Is there anything we can do?

The symptoms sound a lot like Rhizosphaera needle cast. Here is a link to information: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/spruce-tree-diseases/rhizosphaera-needl... After you read through the article, please note that it is highly suggested that a sample be sent to the Plant Health Clinic for diagnosis.http://pdc.umn.edu/submit-sample You want to be sure you are treating for the correct problem.
