What is the best Time of year to have shrubs cut and trimmed, that are of many species and varieties? Our budget limits us so that itcan only be done one time annually. We reside in a home owners association in Butler Township. Does the temperature and the season make a difference? Your help would be appreciated. Thank you, (our board sees nothing wrong with trimming in the middle of July, last year it was 92°)

Hello from Lake County. Thanks you for giving me the opportunity to answer your pruning question. As a rule of thumb, the best time to prune is early spring/late winter. That being said, there are a few exceptions. If your shrub flowers, do not prune it until after the plant has flowered. When it is finished, prune right away, before it sets buds for the following year.. An exception to that is a rose bush. I will include a link to a fact sheet on how to prune roses at the end. With hydrangea you need to know if the bush is an old or new variety because the old type blooms on old wood and the newer variety blooms on new growth. I never top them, but cut out the dead wood in the spring when they bud. I will also include a very good fact sheet from O (OK)SU describing how to prune. Hope this helps!! http://pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1134/HLA-6409web2012.pdf http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/1205.html
