Mulching with sawdust

Asked June 28, 2015, 10:47 AM EDT

Trying to retain moisture in pots in this hot weather....is it OK to mulch all plants with sawdust (from my spouse's woodshop) and does it matter what kind of sawdust? Thanks!

Yes, you may mulch your plants with sawdust. The only sawdust to avoid is that from chemically treated lumber. Here's a link to Cornell University gardening resources "Mulches for Landscaping". http://www.gardening.cornell.edu/factsheets/mulch/mulchland.html#intro
This should help with the water retention issue.
