Timing of pruning Elephant Heart Plum Tree

I've heard to avoid pruning plum trees until June to avoid silverleaf disease (at least, that's what I remember the disease to be), but by then there are many plums developing and it's harder to see with all the foliage. Is it really that big an issue, or would February or early March be ok?
