Could you tell me what kind of tree this is? The leaves are soft and fuzzy......
Thank you for sending an image with your question. The tree is most likely an empress tree (Paulownia tomentosa) which tends to seed around freely. Another possibility is a Catalpa. To differentiate between the two, cut across one of the petioles (leaf stems). If the petiole is hollow, the tree is a Paulownia, if solid, a Catalpa. I suggest you remove it soon as possible because both will soon become far too large to be close to the house.http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/1plants.htm#catalpa
Thank you Jean.
Is cutting the tree off at the base sufficient for killing it or do the roots need to be completely removed also?
Either dig out the roots or, immediately after you sever the supporting stems, paint the cut surfaces of the stumps with full strength triclopyr, the active ingredient in most brush killers.
