how do I propagate a red bud tree from its seed pods?

Asked June 14, 2015, 6:35 AM EDT

I have a healthy beautiful red bud that is now covered with what I take to be seed pods. I would like to propagate it and therefore hope that you can instruct me how to do so. Thank you, F La Piana

Seed pods should be collected in late summer after they have dried and turn black. Redbud have a hard seed coat as well as embryo dormancy. Both pre-chilling and scarification are required for germination. Scarify by mechanical filing or using sand paper. Pre-chill for 5 to 8 weeks. plant in April or early May. Fall sowing of freshly harvested seeds that have not thoroughly dried is another alternative.
