How do you treat an Hawthorn tree that has 2 large and 1 smaller branch that has no leaves. Should we cut the tree down. There are more tree in the close vicinity blocking some sun.
You do not say the general condition of the tree or its importance in your landscape. Are these lower branches that have died off due to shading, are they primary branches that are diseased or is the tree in decline due to age? Perhaps something has changed in the soil the tree grows in, excess moisture digging or compaction? In generaI, I would trouble shoot to figure why the branches have died, correct any adverse conditions, prune out dead wood and then enjoy the tree as long as it lives. A good resource for pruning can be found at: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/pruning-trees-shrubs/
