water quality for poultry

Asked June 8, 2015, 8:25 PM EDT

Hello, I am raising chickens near the Mary's River, and am wondering if I can give them water directly from the river. I am downstream of several farms. My questions are: 1) what are the compounds and bacteria that I should be concerned about? 2) Who tests for those compounds and/or bacteria? Thanks!

For watering use the water in the river should be fine, and you will not have to have any testing done. Water will come back positive for bacterial counts when exposed to air. It doesn't mean that all the bacteria are harmful. You do need to make sure that you have the appropriate exempt usage under the Oregon Water Law which can be found here http://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/537.141
