Fast growing trees

Asked June 8, 2015, 3:03 PM EDT

My son lives in Bend.....looking for fast growing trees to form a privacy screen. (His backyard fence is adjacent to a busy street.) I was hoping to do cypress, but i don't think they'll grow in that zone. I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have!!

Hi there,

How nice of you to do some landscaping for your son!

I talked to our Horticulturist, and she highly recommends Upright Juniper. The great thing about this plant is that it is drought tolerant, deer and insect resistant. It also comes in a variety of colors and sizes. This plant provides year-round privacy and is also an excellent noise absorber, which will be key if you are next to a busy street.

For more information and inspiration on plants you might consider for your son's yard, I recommend our Xeriscaping in the High Desert publication: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/deschutes/sites/default/files/xeri-all_1.pdf

Best of luck!
