The information about black walnut toxicity is largely anecdotal. Lists of sensitive and tolerant plants have been created based on observation. Boxwood does not fall on the highly sensitive list, but it is not included on the tolerant list either. This could mean that no one has observed the results of planting boxwood under black walnuts. The following are links to information about black walnut toxicity from university and arboretum sites.

When looking at garden forums and blogs, which might not be reliable, I found conflicting information. Some reported success planting boxwood under black walnuts. Others report that boxwood are sensitive.
