river bank stabilizing plants

Asked June 3, 2015, 6:09 PM EDT

I live on the Siletz River between the town of Siletz and Logsden. the river bank is fairly steep in some areas (>45 degrees). I'd like to put two different types of plants in places to minimize erosion, one that is more of a ground cover and one that is more of a shrub. Could you please offer suggestions on plants for this purpose? Many thanks, Paul

On the Oregon coast you may want to utilize willows along the water and Bracken fern and shrubs such as Red-osier dogwood on the banks. Here is a publication on river bank stabilization in the Willamette Valley. Some of the plants are not well suited to our area, but the information is good.
