Apple Tree - bark damage and missing leaves

Asked June 3, 2015, 4:44 PM EDT

I noticed my young apple tree has bark damage and lacks leaves on the lower branches. What should I do about this problem? (both healing the damage and preventing in the future) Thanks!

This may of been caused by mowing equipment or wildlife, rabbits will gnaw on the bark during the winter months. Cut away the loose material with a clean, sharp knife then protect the trunk by surrounding it with wire or a piece of drain tile. Suggest pulling some of the mulch away from the trunk to the top of the ball. Planting too deep can effect its growth.
