I have several houseplants and am noticing a white sticky cotton-like substance on some of the plants. I have been treating with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol but the problem comes back. It has been on my aloe vera plant, my hoya (which is in full bloom right now) and a crown of thorns. I've also found it on other house plants which I threw out. What is this and how do I get rid of it?

What you have described suggests that the plants are infested with mealy bugs. If so, these pests can be very difficult to eliminate. Disposing of severely infested plants, as you have done, is sometimes the best option.
