Pruning crape myrtle

Asked May 22, 2015, 9:49 AM EDT

Can I assume the peripheral branches that are not leafing are cold weather damaged and prune them out or wait a while to see if they get leaves? Is May a good time to remove dead, diseased, and branches growing toward the center? The crape myrtle is about 15 feet tall.

Now is a good time to remove dead, diseased and branches growing toward the center of the crape myrtle. Scratch the bark of questionable branches with your fingernail. If there is no green beneath, those portions are dead and should be removed. Lots of crape myrtles have dead branches due to this last rough winter. vw
